Argument rages over England all-black rugby shirt

Argument rages over England all-black rugby shirt

England's choice of all-black kit for the Rugby World Cup has come under much scrutiny in New Zealand, where the 2011 tournament will be held.

The New Zealand team has been synonymous with its kit for generations, which - as its iconic nickname will attest - is All Black. Despite many teams choosing a black away kit in recent years, none have gone for the fully black kit; usually opting for white shorts, sleeves or socks.

However, ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, England has broken with tradition and unveiled its own all-black kit, feeling that new colour scheme would drive sales of men's rugby shirts. Yet in the face of much derision from New Zealand fans and players, the RFU is adamant it was given the all-clear by the relevant authorities.

"Fully aware of the significance of a black shirt to New Zealand's players and population as a whole, we have fully consulted with the NZRU (New Zealand Rugby Union), who confirmed they had no issues," an RFU spokesperson told BBC News.

However, Kiwi rugby legend Jonah Lomu was not so favourable, telling sportal.co.nz: "When I got asked this question and when I saw the picture I was just saying: one thing's for sure - the All Blacks are the original and anybody who is after the original is an imitator." The kit will debut in the summer friendlies against Wales and Argentina.
